Somehow until now we have not hiked Pima Canyon. It is a great hike in the foothills of Tucson. Like a lot of hikes in the area, you can make it as long or as short as you want. You can go out and back or even connect to other trails for a horseshoe like shuttle.
We went on a weekday morning and though there were about a dozen cars in the lot, the trail wasn’t busy. People must get a sunrise start because right away we passed most people who were coming back down the trail. A couple things – there are a few stream crossings in the winter/spring but you don’t have to get your feet wet if you have balance and can rock hop. That said, it’s very refreshing to hear water trickling in the desert. Also, dogs aren’t allowed though that didn’t deter one hiker who had her dog with her. 🙁
The trail is rocky in spots and not a smooth tread so if that bothers you, this might not be your hike. The views are outstanding with lots of cacti and surrounding mountains. We even passed through quite a bit of green area where grasses from recent rains and snow happily grew. It’s general uphill on the way out, and downhill on the way back so pick your turnaround spot and enjoy.
I’d definitely hike here again.
