We made the hour drive to Patagonia, AZ one day to ride a fun section of the AZ Trail. Patagonia used to be a pretty sleepy town but tourism is alive and well today. The downtown park was full of cars and the streets were lined with cars the weekday we were there. This is where we started our ride.
After crossing the main road (highway) through town, we headed up a dirt road that climbs steadily but never very steeply for about 7 miles. There are some surprise downhill sections sprinkled in, as you get back up into the mountains. Before long we arrived at the Temporal Gulch Trailhead and the singletrack. This section is another few miles of climbing up onto the ridge.
This section of single track is fairly new as it winds down the ridge back and forth with sweeping turns. It’s cut along the side of the hill so if you are at all afraid of heights, it might be a little unnerving. The trail isn’t extremely technical riding. It’s just great, fast fun cross-country.
at the bottom we tied it together with the crust town trail to get back to the start. This section isn’t great but at least you don’t have to ride the highway..
