Deer Park is part of Olympic National Park and the road up is an adventure itself. It’s still closed to cars right now so Derek took the opportunity to ride to the top to check it out. I hiked the lower part. This road is a beast. It’s 8.5 miles up and 3820′ of climbing. It’s steep. And hard.
The road is gravel and very narrow with not a lot of pull outs. The lower section climbs through forest and winds around back and forth with plenty of shade. Further up the road gets more narrow and the trees disappear. This early in the season the road is still soft in spots and it looks like they are working to regrade part of it before it opens. That soft soil is an added challenge!
At the top there are beautiful views as you can see in the pictures. In a lot of places on the upper stretches of this ride you can look across and see Hurricane Ridge Road where we hiked the other day. I asked Derek if he would ride this again. “No, it’s really hard.”
