Since we’re up in Port Angeles all summer we hope to be able to everything there is to do. On Trailforks App we saw the mutli-purpose Foothills Trails system that is close to town and checked them out.
The Foothills Trails network is on Department of Natural Resources land and truly multi-purpose so you’ll need a Discovery Pass. Trails are open to everything but vehicles. Some trails have width restrictions, meaning not open to ATV’s and we pretty much stuck to those. This isn’t technical riding with roots or rocks really, just lots of winding swooping trails. Some are in recent logging areas and out in the open, while some are DEEP in forest and lush green. Amazing diversity out here.
Be ready to climb. There is a lot of elevation out here and the views on a clear day are vast. It was a bit overcast and stormy towards the Strait of Juan de Fuca the day we rode but you could still see it. My favorite trail out here is Water World. It was a dark, spooky winding trail through the forest with moss everywhere. I was 100% surprised we didn’t see bears on this trail.
With all that climbing comes some steep downhills. Some of them were a bit loose so just be aware. The network is most heavily used by motos but we didn’t see or hear any on a weekday. I wouldn’t say this is a destination network for mountain bikers, but we’ll be back to ride out here since we’re up in the area.
