After our ride the other day we changed into regular clothes and shoes and hiked around the Founders Grove in the Redwoods.
The Founders Grove is dedicated to the founders of the Save-the-Redwoods League. In 1917, several prominent men traveled to Humboldt County to view the magnificent redwood groves. When they found out the trees were not protected, they formed the Save-the-redwoods League to preserve areas of the primeval forest.
The Humboldt Redwoods State Park has SEVEN times the biomass of a tropical rainforest. This Ancient or Old Growth Forest is amazing. Coast Redwoods commonly live 500-700 years and and amazingly, one of the trees is over 2200 years old! Due to climate change, Coast Redwoods now only grow naturally in a narrow 40 mile wide and 450 mile long coastal strip from Southern Oregon to Southern Monterey County in California. Redwoods need great amounts of moisture to live. Though, they do create their own microclimate through the transpiration of moisture from the leaves to the atmosphere. A very large tree can release up to 500 gallon of water into the air per day. WOW!
I was impressed with the quiet grandeur of the forest.
