Derek and I did a short but rewarding hike in Mesa Verde National Park the other day. This loop takes you a short distance down into the canyon and then along the cliffs to see some petroglyphs. I highly recommend it if you’re in the park.
This 3 mile hike is not a fast one because there is a lot to see and pick your way through. It is constantly going up or down rock steps, over roots, and negotiating around boulders… it’s rugged. It’s not for anyone with mobility issues and remember, you’re up around 7000′! That said, it’s amazing!
We were here on a weekday and only saw one other person on the trail but on the weekend I imagine you would see more. Though it seems like most people visit the park to do the tours and not necessarily take advantage or have the time to hike these gems. I hope you have the time. It’s pretty special to experience and imagine what life was like for the ancestral Puebloans.
