Derek and I rode a version of this back when we were in Joshua Tree in 2021. That version was 22.5 miles with 2300′ of climbing. We remembered the start to be pretty sandy so we drove in further this time and cut off a few miles.
This is a shortish ride that packs a pretty big punch as far as solitude and views. The conditions change here every year depending on how much rain there has been. Since we started past the super sandy part this time, it was all pretty fast going. Lower Covington Flat road is all dirt/gravel and is NOT flat. The ride follows this all the way out and then turns right on Covington Flat Crossover Road (a lesser dirt road).
This section is the most interesting as you climb up higher on a rougher road to get to the upper hiking trails. At the eventual next intersection we hung a right on Eureka Peak Rd and followed that out to the very end. This is the destination….what a view! We took a break to admire the views and then bombed all the way back down to the start.
