When we were in Durango last month we rode part of the Colorado Trail there. This past week we spent three days riding sections of it around Salida and Buena Vista. They were all black diamond sections and since we’re on a budget we can’t afford shuttles. So, we rode them as out and backs. Tough!
The Colorado Trail goes between Denver and Durango and is 567 miles long. The riding we did in the area was all in forests and incredibly beautiful. Each day started at least at 8000 feet and went up a few thousand. This trail involved lots of technical climbing and of course, then descending. The tread is rocky in a lot of places, with steep switchbacks and small water crossings. We came across a handful of bikepackers and all commented how tough it was. I was happy to be not be carrying that much gear around.
Off the bike we’ve been hanging out with some other full time rvers camping in the area. We’ve been to 3 BBQs and eating good! This unconventional life feels completely normal now.
