After finally leaving the Gila National Forest, we moved for a few weeks to the White Mountains of Arizona. Our boondocking spot is nestled in tall pines at around 7500′. There is a rare week-long thunderstorm expected to happen coming up so we hurried to get a few outdoor activities in.
The Secret Trails in the White Mountains aren’t a secret, that’s just their name. This stacked trail system is on land managed by the Apache-Sitgreaves National Forest. The trail system offers a feeling of seclusion and isolation even with its central location. Several of the trails offer fantastic sweeping views at various points and in all directions; hence the name, “Buena Vista”, meaning “good views”. One of the trails is even guarded by a full elk skeleton by the name of Walter (you can see it in the pics below).
These trails were fun and flowy without being overly technical. The only hard part is finding your way. There aren’t a lot of signs but most are on the Trailforks app. This is a nice little gem of a trail system that could keep you busy for a few days if you switched up directions and trails.
