Having gone south on the Arizona Trail on the Kaibab Plateau the other day, north seemed like the obvious choice for another day. This way the trail starts with a gentle climb up through the pine forest and turns to double track a couple miles in. After about 4 miles it turns back into singletrack. Again, this is technically easy for riding or hiking but some might have aerobic challenges if they aren’t used to altitude. I hiked this and Derek rode a big section so it’s suitable for both.
I can see how this would be an ideal area for bikepacking (overnight trips where you carry all your gear). But we like the comfort of the bed in our trailer so we just do day trips. The forest sure smells good with warm pine.
