On a cool overcast day we drove to Quilicene, Washington to ride the Lower Big Quilicene River Trail. You can do this as an out and back but to see more, we rode it as a loop. This had us climbing up a paved and then gravel road, and coming down the singletrack trail.
After climbing up to the top of Lower Big Quilicene River Trail on gravel roads, we took a break, ate our sandwiches, and began the VERY fun descent. The trail for the first part is pretty narrow and winds past large old-growth cedars on a moss lined trail. Blooming rhododendrons add vibrant color to this kaleidoscope of green. We crossed a couple rivers and passed some campsites before finishing on the lower section of trail. The last couple of miles seem more heavily traveled (hikers coming up from the lower trialhead). We saw a few but no other cyclists on the weekday we were there.
If you’re in the area I’d definitely recommend checking this trail out, even if you just hike up from the bottom a few miles. And if you like gravel exploring, there seems to be a lot out here, The forest and river are beautiful.
What a pretty area. Thank you for sharing.
