For our 25 year anniversary we took a day trip to Seattle. I had not been since I was little and Derek had never been! We drove to Bainbridge Island and took the 30-40 min ferry across to Seattle which was very seamless. I spent both crossings outside taking in the views and fresh sea air.
We started by walking along the waterfront, wandering here and there. Eventually we wound through Pike’s Place Market to see the madness. We aren’t around a lot of crowds and it was definitely overwhelming! The gum wall was disgusting but all the little kids around seemed to be delighted. Yes, we saw them throw fish at the fish market. We saw the first Starbucks and seriously, the hundred people or so lined up outside to get a coffee there.
Continuing up along the waterfront we walked through Olympic Sculpture Park to see some of the sculptures and take in the views of the waterfront. Walking further, we saw the monorail, and giant park around the Space Needle. I got my picture taken with the Chris Cornell statue outside the Museum of Pop Culture, and on we walked.
We walked to Lake Union and watched the float planes take off and land. We wanted to check out The Center for Wooden Boats but it was closed. Instead, we walked along the Historic Ships Wharf. Nearly a century ago, the best mass transit system in the Pacific Northwest was the Mosquito Fleet. Steamships like Virginia V ferried people, farm produce, and more than the occasional cargo of livestock between the cities and towns that lined Puget Sound.
Next up after all the walking, was a nice cold beer at Old Stove Brewery overlooking the water of Elliot Bay. It is a fantastic location and the beer was refreshing. We were blessed with a warm sunshine filled afternoon after a foggy morning and the evening ferry ride back to Bainbridge Island was almost dreamy.
The adventure didn’t stop though. We had dinner at what was reported to be Seattle’s best fish and chips restaurant. Proper Fish isn’t a fancy place but it was definitely good. It’s a small and tucked away at the end of the main drag and they aren’t open very late but we made it.
Great trip!
