From camp we hiked down to Spawn Creek Trailhead and then up Spawn Creek trail into the canyon for a couple miles. Overall our hike was around 6 miles and astonishingly we didn’t see anyone!!!!!
Spawn Creek Trail heads uphill gently through grassy meadows with the creek on one side and forest on the other. This is Beaver Restoration Area and there must have been at least 30 beaver dams along the way. Some of the dams are huge works of art with small lakes pooling up behind them. On a few we could see families of ducks happily swimming about. The mud and stick piles beavers live in are especially impressive when you consider the work involved. They have to go find the trees, gnaw them down with their teeth, carry them back, pile them up and then add mud and basically urine glue.
This is an out and back so when the trail got overgrown and it got the temperature reached 90 degrees, we turned around and hiked back the way we came. If you look closely, in one of the pictures below you can see a camouflaged spider. This spider changes colors to match the flower and mask itself in order to capture the unsuspecting bee that becomes dinner. Fascinating.
Our stove/oven in the trailer is acting up. The propane is too low going to the burners and the oven. It’s frustrating to try and trouble shoot and research because we don’t have internet or cell reception where we are camped. Tomorrow we’ll head into town and see if maybe just a new propane hose can fix the problem.
