Wow. I mean, how am I not desensitized to nature and beauty? We’ve seen SO MANY things over the years! Crater Lake is amazing. I rode from camp up to the Steel Visitor Center and then out the section of Rim Road that is still closed to cars. My ride was 26 miles with 2760′ of climbing.
Most of the road is clear of snow though there is still a lot of debris on the surface. Once that gets all cleaned up they will open it to cars but until then it’s glorious. This is my second ride out this section of road and I’ve only seen a few other people. Oh, and a bear!
Riding along, thinking to myself how lucky I am, I look over and see a bear grazing in the meadow. I stopped and snapped a picture before continuing on. My destination was Phantom Ship Overlook just after the split to Pinnalces. First though, I had to stop for a million pictures. The waterfalls, the rocks, the lake, the trees… there is just so much to take in.
Phantom Ship is an island that is 170 feet high, 500 feet long, and 200 feet wide. It’s appropriately name because it looks like a ghostly ship with tall masts and drooping sails. Phantom Ship is actually a resistant remnant of an ancient volcanic cone that was engulfed in the growing Mazama volcano. I was astonished at how blue the water was today too.
From here I turned around and rode back home.
Since I was solo, I was in charge of the camera. Big mistake. I accidentally had it on a weird setting for part of my ride and took 1 second videos. Oops.
