Winter boondocking is all about stalling out in warmer areas and chasing sun. We run off solar so it’s important to have sun! After consulting weather apps we made a decision. Two weeks outside Vegas lets us get some maintenance done on the trailer (thank god for mobile rv techs).
First up, we hiked Middle Oak Creek out in Red Rock Canyon. There are a ton of trails out here so lots of options for folks wanting different distances and challenges. We just wanted to get out in the desert and hike, see cool rocks and admire nature. In this, we succeeded!
We started at the Middle Oak Creek TH and hiked out, around The Knoll and back for a lollipop. There are sections of this route that are VERY rocky – like masses of jumbled loose rock. I’m glad I had my poles because they allow my to hike while not having to stare at the ground as much. There are some trail markers but using Alltrails App is the best bet because there are social trails everywhere. Our loop around The Knoll included crossing a small creek several times and there was actually a bit of water!
I love all the colors of the rocks and background. It’s hard to believe this wonderland is a short drive from the bright lights and big city of Vegas.
