Cedar Wetlands Preserve Walk

Within the city limits of Rockaway Beach is an ancient cedar bog. In the middle of the residential section of town is a 1.2 mile walk along an elevated boardwalk. The walk goes through an ancient cedar bog that contains some extremely large and old western red cedars and Sitka spruce, among other vegetation. At the end is the center piece…a huge cedar 154 feet tall, and 49 feet wide.

We walked there from our rv and then did the walk out the boardwalk to see the preserve. It’s an easy stroll with very little elevation change. It’s such a serene setting back in there with birds chirping, a heavy canopy of trees, the sounds of Saltair Creek burbling in the background.

Breathe it all in. I just finished reading Becoming Earth : how our planet came to life about how symbiotic relationships evolved. It details how plants and other photosynthetic organisms help maintain the right level of atmospheric oxygen to support complex life. I think about that a lot as a walk along the beach here because the area encompasses the three sections of the book; soil, water, air.
