We really wanted to stay at a primitive back-country site in the park but they were all reserved by the time we were in cell reception range to try to get one. So, we are spending a couple weeks in a campground on the eastern side of Big Bend National Park now. Our spot is pretty nice. It’s surrounded by thick vegetation with a little yard. Every day we have a roadrunner that visits us, some javelina, and plenty of birds.
Roadrunners are fascinating. We spent at least half an hour watching ours last night. He likes to turn so his back faces the sun, spread out his wings, and ruffle out his feathers so he can absorb the sun on his silky black back. He raises and lowers his long tail feathers and then shoots forward hunting.
A really quick, short hike from our campspot leads to an overlook and down along the Rio Grande. We saw a few birds and fish, the river, and Mexico!
Hot Springs Canyon Trail
We took an afternoon to hike from camp out to the hot springs along the Rio Grande. This is a 5.5 mile out and back that ends at the springs. It was around 85 degrees the afternoon we hiked this and I opted to go in the river instead of the hot springs. The trail isn’t very difficult with a tad less than 1000’ of climbing. Views along the way varied from looking down on the river, back at camp, and the Chisos Mtn range off in the distance across the desert.
