Bowl of Fire Hike, Lake Mead National Recreation Area

Wowzer! Our Bowl of Fire Hike was amazing. This wasn’t a traditional hike where we followed a trail but instead, was free hiking up and across giant rock slabs into picturesque canyons. This slow going hike was 5.5 miles of true adventure and we had the entire place to ourselves!

The other day we hiked Anniversary Narrows and from Anniversary Peak we looked down into the Bowl of Fire so it was fun to now hike through it. To get here we drove down Callville Wash which necessitates 4wd. The road is sandy in spots and at the very beginning you have to negotiate a little loose bumpy steep hill that most regular cars would probably get stuck on. If you park here at the beginning you will have to walk about 2 miles down the sandy wash to get to the point we started at.

The giant beehive rocky formations that look like dripping lava with huge cavernous holes hiding haunted who knows what go on for miles. This was a choose your own adventure hike and we did just that. The bright red Aztec sandstone is from the Jurassic period and is the remnant of the sand left behind by the wind after inland seas subsided and the land rose. It is a veritable playground and we spent a few hours wandering around and climbing on rocks. So fun!
