Continental Divide Trail Sapillo

The Continental Divide Trail runs from Canada to Mexico and we have ridden a lot of sections of it. Last time when we were in this area we did this section as an out and back which was very hard. This time I dropped Derek off so he could ride from over by Roberts Lake back to camp while I hiked out and back. His ride was 25 miles with 2956′ of climbing, which is a lot.

I dropped him off at Roberts Lake which we plan to hike around later in our stay. From there, he rode out to and along paved 15 to a series of dirt roads and trail to get to the CDT. The road is not very heavily used on a weekday and less then a dozen cars passed him coming the other way (towards the cliff dwellings). With most of the climbing over before the trail, the fun part starts.

The trail traverses around the mountains on a very narrow trail that hugs the side. It’s hard to look at all the views when you only have a small margin of error before you plummet off the side. The end is a bomb down into Sapillo Campground on a volcanic pumice like trail. What a unique experience with fantastic views! This early in the season the trail is a bit overgrown and hard to find in places. It’s a primitive experience…especially with zero cell services out here.

Our solar panels are killing it out here with all this sun and open sky. It did take some time for us to pick a spot in the forest where we would get the most sun. Very tall pine trees cover the area and it’s great being back in the forest.
