Ages ago Derek and I raced the Humbug Hurry-up – a mountain bike race in Yreka, CA. I remember it was pretty long and had some great climbing and fun downhills. On our way up to the Oregon Coast we stopped for a night in Yreka and rode here again.
To catch y’all up, we left our summer spot along the Trinity River in California and we’re heading for the northern Oregon coast for awhile. Derek is going to run the kitchen at a brewery and we’re going to have a billion new adventures, so stay tuned! Since Yreka was just an overnight spot, we pulled into free camping at the casino in town. This is by far one of the nicest casino free spots I’ve seen, though I think we’ve only stayed at one! HAHA
Our ride started from the casino as we rode the short two miles to the Greenhorn Trails. The riding here looks a lot like the riding we did all summer by Redding and Weaverville. It’s been a long hot summer so the hillsides are dry. Lucky for us, it was early enough in the day that it wasn’t too hot and the shade on the climbs was nice. At the top of the climb there are descent views of Shasta but it was a bit hazy from the moisture and heat.
The trails are not incredibly technical but they are pretty narrow and off camber along some of the mountain sides. For the most part it’s just fast, flowy, and fun! Our loop was just under two hours but you could add on some other trails or do another lap if you wanted further distance/time.
